Todd
I don't understand! I knew before that she didn't want to be my girlfriend, but we'd hung out so much lately that I thought she changed her mind!I think back on the past few weeks. Adele came over almost every day. It was weird that she wanted to hang out at my house, but I didn't mind. Her dad scares me.
Oh no. He's going to hear that I kissed Adele, I think with dread filling my veins.
It didn't work.
I text Eddie. He told me I should try it since he kissed Helen and liked it. Eddie's convinced that me and Adele should be a couple too. I can't believe what my best friend has turned into.
He thinks Helen is the prettiest girl in school, and since she's his girlfriend then that makes them the most popular couple. He's going around the school like he owns it. The worst is that it looks like everyone else agrees! When did this become important?
Eddie (he wants us to call him that instead of Eduardo because it's easier and faster to say -- whatever) told me that it was embarrassing that Adele wasn't my girlfriend. I hardly know the guy anymore! We're eleven, and he acts like we're sixteen or something.
I walk inside to hear my parents fighting in the kitchen, so I sigh to myself and walk into the den to escape. They don't expect me to be home for a while, and I don't want to get in the middle of all that yelling.
We have a big piano that no one plays.
"You're not my friend anymore!" I hear Adele's voice yell at me in my head.
Sighing again, I sit down on the piano bench. Staring at the black keys, I notice they're grouped up into twos and threes over and over again.
I reach up and lightly press down on a key in the middle just under and to the left of a set of two black keys. Then, I do the same for the one just under and to the left of the next set of two to my right.
Huh. They sound the same... kinda, I think as I play the two keys back and forth
Out of curiosity, I play the note just under and to the left of the set of three black keys. It's a little different somehow. Then, I randomly play the higher note under the two black keys before going to the one under the three and back again.
That was cool! I think as I do it again. Then, I play all three keys at the same time. I have to use two hands, so I do the lower one with my left hand. It's a nice sound.
Playing around now, I move each finger up a key to try out other combinations with the same space apart. They all sound good until one of them sounds broken... or something. Even though it sounds broken, I like it. It fits my mood right now and somehow makes me feel better.
I try out different combinations of the different keys to see what happens and see if I can get a similar sound elsewhere. Sometimes it works, and sometimes I have to trade a white key for a black one.
Then, something I play sounds like Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. I sit and figure it out while I sing the note that's supposed to come next before I find the sound on the piano.
Before too long, I try out a few other songs I know, and it starts to become easier to guess how many keys to jump from what I remember the sounds sounded like while I was stacking notes a while ago.
"What are you doing in here?!" my dad suddenly yells at me from the doorway to the den, and I jump out of my skin. "What makes you think it's okay to bang on the piano like that?" he snaps.
"I wasn't banging! I was playing very quietly so you wouldn't be bothered by me!" I say back to him while getting off the piano bench.
"Listen! I can play a song!" I tell him and rush back over to the keys to play Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star again. I mess up a few times, but I eventually get it out.
"You're not old enough to be playing on the piano. It's not a toy," he says in a scolding tone.
"I wasn't treating it like a toy," I say, trying not to sound like I'm sassing back at him.
"You want to take lessons?" he asks, then he doesn't wait for me to answer. "Good. Go find a teacher. I'll pay for it. It'll get you out of my hair more, you and your little friend Allison or whoever," he says in an irritated voice.
"Adele," I correct him, knowing he doesn't care anyway. And I don't think that'll be a problem anymore.
"Whatever, but you don't touch the piano again until you're taking lessons, got it?"
"Yes, sir," I answer and gently close the lid with a feeling of sadness. I have no idea where I can find a piano teacher or even if I want someone to teach me.
Getting "that look" from Dad, I leave the den for my room. Once in there, I pull the jewelry box out of the pocket of my jeans and open it up. I'd hurriedly thrown the locket in the box before leaving Adele's room, so I work on untangling it now.
That done, I stare at the locket in my hand, feeling hurt. I thought for sure she'd like it because Adele likes this kind of stuff even if she sometimes tries to play like she's got a tough shell around her. Even I think it's pretty, and I think it looked pretty on her.
Why did she have to get so mad?! Why did I listen to Eddie?! Why did I have to kiss her?! I scream in my head and can't really think up an answer.
I don't know, I internally growl as I arrange the locket like it's supposed to be in the box before closing it and putting it in my sock drawer. Mom makes me match my own socks, saying she gets tired of me losing them, so I know it'll stay hidden.
I guess I don't have to worry about getting her something for Christmas, I think dully before getting out my tablet to play something.
Then Adele is weird
My phone chirps at me, and I read the text back from Eddie. Adele isn't weird, I growl at him in my head.
You're weird.
I text back. He probably reads that as me kidding around, and I don't care to correct him. I meant it in an "I'm fed up with this" way.
We have a week until we get out for our break for Christmas and New Year's, and it's a week from hell. Eddie teases me unmercifully, and Helen thinks it's the funniest thing, encouraging him to keep doing it. Adele sits quietly all by herself at lunch. She even looks like she's all by herself when she's surrounded by people during class. I'm scared to go talk to her.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The child piano poses turned out great the first try, and they're available here. All but 2 of the poses in the last shot I did, but I'm having trouble getting the dern picnic table to show up in Blender, so it'll be a while before they get released.

Poor Todd he is really having a hard time of this kissing business. It's nice to hear his side of the relationship though. I felt for Adele too sitting all alone, if only he knew it was not just him she was thinking and worrying about. I love the poses on the piano, and the one of 'Eddie' cuddling Helen. Nice pun 'Heldo' wonder where that came from...lol. Hope to hear more from Todd.
ReplyDelete"This kissing business" hehe. That makes me giggle.
DeleteHe kept trying, and Eddie didn't help one bit. All Eddie can think about now is staying "cool" and being Mr. Big-man of their grade level. Todd really just wants a friend as well even if he's closer to the romance thing than Adele is. He knows he thinks Adele is beautiful (though he wouldn't use that word yet), but he's not as into the romancy stuff like Eddie and Helen want him to be. So, he's decided to drop his friendship with Eddie since taking that advice cost him his friendship with Adele.
True, he has no idea what Adele's real problems are. Btw, she's not as depressed as he thinks she is; she just has a lot on her mind that she doesn't want to share with anyone except family.
I need to get my behind to the downstairs puter and get those poses out...
Heldo: hehe. I've snuck that in a few places. It's stuck even though Eduardo likes to be called Eddie now.
:)
:( Aww poor Todd. He has an unhappy home life, a friend that is girl crazy. Heldo---that is funny. And yeah at 11 how are they so concerned with 'dating'? I think Todd and Adele have the right idea at that age. Now he doesn't have her, or Eddie LOL. :( poor kid just needs a hug.
ReplyDeleteI had a feeling I'd be getting a lot of "poor Todd"s. :) Yeah, his life could be better. His parents are too busy for him, so he's really an afterthought and annoyance. The worst is that he's figured that out.
DeleteEddie has turned girl and status crazy, yes. Heldo just kinda came out, I think back at the beginning of Adele's party.
11: To me, idk about anyone else, that's when the whole "you're not cool unless you have a boyfriend/girlfriend" thing first started. That's putting it bluntly, but it's a way to put it. Yeah, it's a bit young for most folks, I guess, but I'm sticking to it. :)
Right, Adele and Todd agree that it's not important to them. Sure, Todd's attracted to her, but he really did want a friend. Then, he got worried after listening to Eddie.
*hugs Todd*
Todd's Dad is weird. What a jerk he seems to be. I hope the piano lessons turn out and he finds some relief from his sadness. He's too young to worry so much about kissing and girlfriends. I am sure Adele will come around, but she's battling her own issues, not just the kiss. I do worry that Todd is quite sensitive though. Great poses :)
ReplyDeleteMhm, Todd's parents are very busy with their jobs and various activities. They avoid each other as much as they can and Todd even more.
DeleteTodd doesn't know if the piano is the answer, but he knows he really, really liked trying to figure out different stuff on it. So, now, it's become like a game, even cooler than any game he could play on his tablet or computer or gaming system.
He agrees that they're too young, but the badgering from Eddie got to him again like it had back in that food truck scene. Now, he's deciding to just drop his friendship with the attention-hog.
Adele does have issues, as we know. She's not as depressed as Todd thinks she is, but she does have quite a lot on her mind that she doesn't want to share with anyone (which we know what it is).
Thanks! :)
Awwwh! Poor Todd :( he's such a nice little guy, it's sad to think he's so meloncholy... Coz he's only eleven- there's plenty of time for all that 'love' stuff! But I guess that's all apart of growing up :P
ReplyDelete'Heldo' is just hi-larious! And so typical of them too, forgetting about friendships- just so they can be popular? Hopefully Todd can see past those two and stick by them, remembering that they're all friends :)
Love this chapter as with all of the others! Haven't commented before either, so it's nice to give credit where credits due :) this story's wonderfully composed as well as written ;) and interaction between all characters is masterful! Just love it!
Love this story!
"Love" stuff. Hehe. :) Yeah, there's plenty of time, but there are always those that want to jump the gun and grow up as fast as they can.
DeleteI used to go nuts every time a friend of mine had a new boyfriend/girlfriend because they'd go all goo-goo eyed over them and not want anything to do with me for weeks. Not that I felt like they had to, but it did hurt my feelings. /shrug.
He'd like to stay friends with Eddie, but Eddie's changing so fast that Todd feels like he can't keep up!
It's nice to hear from you! Thank you for the wonderful compliment. /blush
I had no idea life was so rough for Todd. Poor kid..his father is a DOUCHE BAG. Why can't he play the piano? Someone has to. Eddie and Helen need to slow all the way down. Before you know it, they'll be having sex and she'll be pregnant because it's "cool". Kids grow up too fast for their own good. Todd shouldn't have listened to that idiot (Ik he's a kid, forgive me lol) and just remained friends with Adele. They could both use one right now :(
ReplyDeleteDouche bag sums it up for Mr. Baker, that's for damn sure. Ummm... it only now just hit me. Todd's last name is Baker, and his dad works as head chef at the resort. LOL! /facepalm. I didn't do that on purpose.
DeleteMr. Baker doesn't want the noise of a kid banging around on the piano. He likes his peace and quiet. He never wanted kids to begin with, and Todd sure can feel that.
You're probably right on Heldo ready to jump into all the other growing up stuff. :/ I wish more kids would realize that once they DO grow up, there's no going back.
Todd's listened to Eddie for years, but now, he's giving up on him if he's going to keep up with being ridiculous like he is, according to Todd.
Todd's a little leery of talking to Adele. As far as he knows, she's mad at him, and he'll let her come to him if she wants to be friends again. But he doesn't expect it.
They sure could use each other.
Lol @ the naming. That's sad he doesn't want kids :( He should have worn a condom, or gotten a vasectomy then. Todd didn't just pop out, he and his wife made him.
DeletePoor Todd :( I'm not really sure what else to say... But this comment is waaay too short!
ReplyDeleteI'm hating that not only has he seemingly lost Adele, but his best friends have grown up over night to be popular etc
Do not like his parents either...
I had a feeling I'd get a lot of "poor Todd." It just lends itself towards that, but this part of the story needs to be told, you know how it is. :)
DeleteHe's hoping that Adele comes to him since he's so leery/nervous/cautious around her. He knows he crossed the lines. Plus, he's not sure what to do now since he has no experience with these kinds of things. An older Todd might try to get her to talk to him, but not how he is now.
Holy Cow I was so behind on this story been reading it on and off since 2 am. I am finally caught up and I don't even know where to begin. Marie finally allowed herself to be in a relationship and more. I was hoping Erin was preggers but maybe later. Adelle a witch! Poor Todd so confused (hate the teen yrs myself). I can't wait to read more and see where everyone is headed in the story :)
ReplyDeleteWOW that's a lot of reading! Thanks for getting caught up. :)
DeleteYes, Marie (Jesse too) has come a long way, very much for the better.
hehe, well, you aren't the only one that wanted Erin to be preggers. Her birth control worked differently this time and sent Aunt Flo packing. It's really too soon for them to have a child, but I understand you wanting her to have one! That kiddo was a cutie!
Yes, I've been looking forward to implementing the supernatural part of the story since I made all those new characters before chapter 4, and now I can.
Poor Todd is right. :( He's not even really started the teen years, and they're already hitting him thanks to Heldo.
:)
Glad I got caught up. I just started a new one myself just having trouble with a good skin and some poses.
DeletePoor Todd. That's a lot of pressure to be under. Now I wonder if he really likes Adele, or if it was just Eddie's peer pressure at work.
ReplyDeleteMan, his dad is harsh, and that's a tough spot to be in if his parents are fighting all the time like that. He seemed like a natural on the piano though, it'll be nice if he *can* find someone to give him lessons. Poor kid needs something good in his life right now.
Heldo--hahaha! love it.
Aww. Adele. This was a sad chapter. Now her and Todd are both alone.
Eddie was really giving him a hard time, but now Eddie blames Adele. Still, Todd's mad at him, so that friendship looks to be kaput.
DeleteHis dad's a douche. His parents fight about everything, making Todd want even less to be around them. Lucky, it's a big house. Right now, he's wondering why he's never tried to play the piano before because he's taken to it like a duck to water. :) He's not sure if he wants to find someone to give him lessons or if he wants to just keep trying to figure it out on his own.
:)
Adele's not quite as "sad" as she appeared in that picture. She simply has a lot on her mind that she doesn't feel comfortable talking about with anyone at school.
Maybe they'll find friends elsewhere.

ReplyDeleteThere are lessons to be learned here Todd,
ReplyDelete1. Never ever listen to your friends, they'll stray you from the right path (We've seen the way things turned out with Adele)
2. Don't give in to peer pressure (again, we've seen the way things turned out with Adele)
*motherly advice over*
Todd's father is one hard man. I don't know if that's how he normally is with everyone, or if it was the fight he'd had his wife. But for a 1st meeting, he didn't leave a lasting impression on me.
Todd and Adele are both young, they haven't been poisoned by the bitterness of the world like the adults around them, so I'm hopeful they'll work through this and get their friendship back.
I have a feeling that necklace is going to have so much significance in the story. Totally random thought.
P.S. lots of typos in the first comment so I deleted it.
:/ If only people listened when getting that good advice. He's learning the hard way.
DeleteTodd's dad leaves much to be desired. He's a prick, and it's amazing that Todd is as sweet as he is with his mother avoiding him and his father picking on him. Luckily, it's a big house. If they were at his house, Adele and Todd would just go to his room or to the park or something.
We'll have to wait and see if Todd and Adele can work through this.
:D on the necklace bit.
gotcha on the typos. :)
Aww, poor Todd, I got the feeling that he's kind of alone right now, his parents fighting, his best friend caught up with Helen, and then Adele being mad at him.
ReplyDeleteSeems like his father doesn't really like him, that's sad. :( Can't say much about his mom cause I didn't see her, but he does seem lonely.
So in the last chapter, Adele wasn't wearing the necklace? Since Todd just put it in his sock drawer? :D
Todd's very alone right now. :(
DeleteHis father never wanted kids. Todd was the surprise child that shouldn't have happened. His mom's no saint.
Adele ripped off the necklace and threw it on the floor.
Poor Todd :/ If both of them are questioning why everyone has suddenly started behaving like being in a relationship is so important, there's no rush, right? They're both confused about it. God, it's such a hard time. It'd be nice if everyone could get over it and be friends again but if that happens I have a feeling it won't be for a good few years :/
ReplyDeleteIt's a really hard time, yes. Some kids want to grow up much faster than others, and unfortunately, some other kids want to emulate them. They're at a difficult age.
DeleteTodd's got a tough row to hoe there. And growing up on his own on top of it? :/
ReplyDeleteI guess Adele knows most of how his parents are? What's her reaction to them and their behavior? She knows a far different home life, for sure.
What ho? Huh? Who you callin' a ho?
Deletelmao. I couldn't resist.
Yeah. His parents suck.
Adele would follow Todd's lead and avoid his parents as much as possible. Sneaking in and out would become a fun game. With her there, his home life was just a little more bearable. Now... :(
