78: Wise Beyond Your Years

 Adele

I numbly follow Aunt Pam and Uncle Simon into the house while Uncle Simon carries my passed out daddy. My hands still feel just a little warmer than normal.
"I'm a witch, Adele… and so are you," I hear Aunt Pam's voice in my head. I used some strange power to hurt Daddy, even if I didn't mean to. I'm evil, I think to myself as we all climb the stairs to Daddy's room.
"He just needs to rest, that's all, but keep an eye on him for a minute," Aunt Pam tells Uncle Simon. Then, she turns to me and asks to speak to me in my room.
I nod, and we both make our way across the hallway and into my room before I go put on my old necklace and sit on my bed. Aunt Pam pulls the chair away from my desk and sits in it. I wait to see what she has to say.

Tentatively, she starts. "On the beach, you said that you were bad, but you're not."
"I hurt Daddy," I point out.
"True, but it was unintentional, fueled by an out-of-control anger."
"Is Daddy a witch too?" I ask, wondering that since Pam is one and I'm one that Daddy must be one too.
"No," she answers, surprising me. I scowl. "Your mother is though," she continues quietly like she's apologizing.

"And she's evil. So I'm evil," I state.
"Adele, it's not a matter of being 'good' or 'evil'! It's what you do with what you've been given that determines that," she says with more emotion in her voice.
"How can hurting people be good?" I ask angrily.
Aunt Pam takes a deep breath. "Let me try to explain it to you. Through the centuries, they came up with three different categories, um classifications, for the different inherent abilities witches possessed. Just for clarification, we use colors to name them: white, red, and black. I don't know why they chose those colors, but they still stand in as the way to differentiate. I guess, now that I think about 'why,' I guess you could say that for black, imagine everything around you scorched and burnt. For white, imagine a blank canvas. I honestly can't think of a reason for red. Maybe they thought that was a good middle of the spectrum."
"Which one am I?" I ask with already a guess in my head.
"I'm not positive, but I have a guess. First, let me describe them. Black witches have a higher aptitude for destructive spells. White witches have a higher aptitude for constructive spells. Red have a little of both without a strength in either. Aunt Lynne is a red witch."
"Aunt Lynne's one too?" I ask, surprised but happy that there's someone else.
     "Yes," she answers.
"So, which one do you think I am?" I don't want to tell her my guess until I hear hers.
"I think you're a black witch, judging from the power of what you did. Plus, your mother is one."
     My guess was right.
"So, what? I just go around destroying things like it's my job?" I snap.
"No!" she answers me like she wants me to think that idea is crazy. "You're only seeing the bad. There's good in destruction."
"How?" I ask in a snarky tone.
"Well, imagine there's something bad coming at you. Imagine a swarm of locusts or whatever are about to destroy your crops. Zap! They're gone, and you save the day."
I give her a look like I think she's crazy and say, "There's aren't any locusts around here."
"That was just an example, the same one my mother gave me, and that's why I thought of it. Also, there's usually a better rebirth after destruction. Think of a previous lava flow. What it leaves behind is a great place for new, stronger plantlife. Think of a phoenix."
"So I create the ashes. Fabulous," I say sarcastically and fall back onto my bed, having yet another reason to hate the one that gave birth to me. "And you're a white witch and that's why you were able to so easily cure Daddy," I guess aloud.
"Yes, but that wasn't what I'd call easy. If that's what you did without conscious effort, you're very powerful."
Maybe I'm more powerful than that awful woman that left me and Daddy. Maybe, one day if she ever shows up again, I can blast her off the face of the earth, I smile with the thought.
"Why haven't you told me this before today?" I ask.
She slowly explains it to me. "Because we weren't sure. We like to keep a low profile, as you can imagine, and we didn't expect you to show signs until a little older than now. I'd already started trying to figure out how to tell you since most figure it out at thirteen, fourteen, not as much fifteen and beyond. I guess, you could also say, I didn't want to accept that you're growing up, so I kept you as a child in my mind. And I'm sorry for that."
I sit up to say in a resigned way, "It's fine. As you said, you didn't know and weren't ready or expecting it yet." I think up another question. "Um… What would've happened had you not been around?"
She looks sadly at me but with widened eyes as she answers, "Your dad would've spent days screaming as his own immune system would fight it like the worst burn imaginable, and it's doubtful even morphine would work to ease the pain. You must've been furious."
My lower lip trembles as I say, "That was the maddest I've ever been in my whole life, and I said it was his fault." I start crying.

She hops up out of the chair and sits next to me to hold me in her arms. "People lose their tempers all the time and say what they don't really mean." She pets my hair.
"But I still think it's partly his fault," I say, feeling horribly guilty.
"It may be that it is, but will that stop you from loving him?"
"No," I answer immediately. My dad has always been there, even if he's been sad and trying to fight it in his own way. I figured that out last year after spending the third night in a row at Aunt Pam's house. He didn't want me to have to see him sad and how he dealt with it. I knew that Daddy still loved me because of how he was when we spent time together but that he needed something to take his mind off what that woman did to him. Ever since then, I've been a lot more patient with Daddy. "And I'd say he's gotten enough punishment for pretty much ignoring that woman after what he'd told me. I'm glad Erin's here."
Aunt Pam hugs me tighter for a minute before she whispers, "Me too."
She brought my daddy back, I think and cry more. I was patient with him, but I still missed him, and now he's back.

"I'm mad at him, but you're right. That doesn't mean I don't love him. I'm mad, but you can't change the past, so I've gotta get past it," I tell her, thinking aloud.
"You're wise beyond your years," she says thoughtfully.
"I grew up a lot today, I think." I suddenly remember Todd. I guess that was my first kiss. And my second.
I quickly sit up more and look around Aunt Pam for the necklace where I'd dropped it on the floor. I don't immediately see it, so I get up and go look around.

"What is it?" Aunt Pam asks.
"The necklace. It's gone," I say, feeling melancholy. He must've picked it up and taken it.
"Aren't you wearing it?" Aunt Pam asks and points to the necklace around my neck.
"Oh yeah," I lie like I'd forgotten, not wanting to tell her what happened. My shoulders slump, and I say, "I'm tired. I think I'll go to bed now."
"We'll talk more later, okay? I'll let all this soak in for now," she says and gives me a hug before kissing my forehead.
"Okay," I say, nodding my head. She leaves the room to probably go and check on Daddy again.

Once I've been in bed a while, Daddy walks in.
I sit straight up and start immediately apologizing. "Daddy! I'm sorry! I didn't know! I was mad, but I didn't mean to hurt you! It's not all your fault! I'm so sorry!"

"Shh!" he says and pulls me across his lap. I cry and hug him back. "I know, sweetheart. You think I'm the first parent that's gotten that accusation from their child before? Nope," he tells me, saying the 'nope' like Uncle Jesse would. "And I know you didn't mean to do that. I tried to tell you that before, but I was too exhausted."
"Your hands are cold," I state, finding that weird.
"Are they? That's what Erin said too," he muses.
"Is she okay?" I ask, realizing I hadn't wondered that yet.
     "She's a little shell-shocked, but I think, I hope, that she'll be okay."
"So, she knows," I state in a questioning way.
     "Yes," he answers.
"Do you think she'll be afraid of me now?"
"No, not unless you give her reason to be. Will you?"
"No, but what if I do something on accident again?" I feel like a ticking time bomb.
"Aunt Pam and Aunt Lynne will help with that. I wish I could," he tells me wistfully. "Don't worry." He reaches up with his ice-cold hand and strokes my cheek.
"Daddy, give me your hands. They're freezing." I ask, and he does. I stand up off the bed for better balance as I hold them. They don't look blue. They're cold enough that they might be blue, but they look normal.
     "Why are they like this?"
"I suspect it's a leftover from what Aunt Pam did. It'll probably go back to normal after a while," he answers while I keep looking at his hands.
Could I? I think in regards to a quick thought that I might be able to fix it if I just used a tiny bit of whatever I did earlier. But what if I just hurt him again?
Well, I'm not angry. He just needs warming up. These cold hands bother me. It's not right.
I close my eyes and imagine my hands getting really hot, and they do.
"What are you doing?" Daddy asks, surprised. "Your hands are very hot all of a sudden." He pulls his hands away.
"Let me try something." He won't trust me.
Daddy takes a deep breath and gives me his hands, and I smile happily.

I close my eyes and imagine my hands getting really hot again. Then, I imagine that heat slowly going into Daddy's hands. This is scary, and I worry I'm just crazy and pretending. I keep going anyway, and Daddy's hands return to normal. I lessen what I want to go into him, but his hands start getting hotter anyway. Opening my eyes wide, I completely stop trying to warm his hands up, but they still get hotter. They're not burning me… yet.
"Do you feel that?" I ask and hope he knows what I'm talking about because I have no idea how I could describe it to him.
His brows come together like he doesn't want to say what he's thinking. Suddenly, an electrical zap comes between our hands, and we both pull away at the same time.
"Did I hurt you?" I ask, extremely worried.
"No, but I did feel something besides your hands getting hot and besides the shock. How did you do that?"
"I don't know," I answer. "I'd stopped what I was doing when the zap happened. I think anyway."

Daddy gives me an 'I have no idea' almost-grin. "Do my hands still feel cold?" he asks and puts the backs of his fingers against my throat.

"No," I say with a smile. "I destroyed the little bit of ice still left in your hands."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That whole "black, red, white" thing isn't my idea, far from it. But, I decided to use it because it'll work for me. I personally got that from the Dragonlance series of books that I read as a teen, but I've also seen it in the Final Fantasy stuff.

77: Fire and Ice

Bryce

      Pain.
      .....
      I'm in pain!
      Adele, hurry!
Keep breathing, Bryce. Keep breathing. Don't let it take control.
I try to focus on the wind in the trees as I wait for my sister. My arms are on fire, and if I focus on it, the pain could spread. This is a battle of wills. Mine versus whatever it is she used.
My daughter is a witch. I shouldn't be surprised.
      Pain!
"Bryce!" I hear Pam shout, and I have to focus doubly hard to maintain my control. The child in me cries for his big sister to make it all better.
Pam's soothing voice talks to me as she crouches next to me. "Bryce, move your hands away."
I have a hard time moving my hands away from their protective stance, but I have to trust Pamela to make it stop. I hear Adele crying quietly. I wish I could comfort her, but I have to focus on not losing my head and screaming.

I feel Pam's hands on me, and they feel like ice. Now, the ice fights the fire for me, and I relax a little more. The ice is winning. Of course it is. It's Pam.
How am I going to explain this to Adele? She must be terrified.
I hear Erin call my name and imagine her running over here. Shit. God only knows what she'll make of this scene.
"Erin, no," I moan, wanting her to leave.
"What happened?!" she cries. The ice starts to leave me, and I start feeling normal again... and exhausted. I feel the warm sand on my cheek as I lie down on it. I'm going to pass out.
"Adele," I say as loudly as I can, "I'm okay. Don't be upset."

Erin

When I finally find where Bryce went to, I see him crouched down with a look of terrible pain on his face. Pamela is next to him with her hands on his arms. Adele stands a few feet away, crying.
"Bryce!" I cry out as I run over to the three of them. I see shrinking welts on Bryce's arms. "What happened?!" I ask, afraid. No one says anything. If I didn't know any better, I'd swear Pamela is wiping away Bryce's burn marks.
Finally, they're gone, and Bryce talks to Adele before he passes out.
"What's going on?" I ask in a panic to Pamela. She looks far too calm, in my opinion, that Bryce just fainted.
Her brown eyes, so much like Bryce's, look up at me like she's trying to calm me down as well before she says, "He's just tired."
     "From what?" I ask, wide-eyed.
"We can explain later, but right now, would you go and ask Simon to come over here, and could you watch Jeremy for a little bit?" Her expression tells me to do it without question.
      "But, Adele?" I ask.
"I'll talk to her. Please. I need Simon to carry Bryce back to the house."
"Okay," I answer and walk back to Bryce's house to find Simon.

Adele

"Adele, I'm okay. Don't be upset," Daddy says to me before he passes out. Erin is panicking, and I don't blame her one little bit. An evil monster attacked her boyfriend a minute ago.
As Erin and Aunt Pam talk, I think, What's wrong with me?! How did Aunt Pam do that? Is Daddy really going to be okay? What does all this mean?
Erin walks off to go find Uncle Simon, and Aunt Pam turns to me with a concerned expression.
"Adele, tell me what happened," she requests calmly.

I sniff and say real fast, "We were fighting, arguing, and he said he hated that woman more than me, but I screamed that he couldn't because her leaving is all his fault so he can't hate her more than me, and then our hands were hot, and I wanted Daddy to let go of me, and then I was so angry and wanted to just get him to let go of me, so I pushed away really angrily, and then I was free and Daddy was hurt." I sniff and hiccup a little before I ask, "I did that?"
"Yes, but it's okay now," she answers, and I start crying real hard. I did hurt Daddy.
"I wasn't that mad at him! I was mad at him and that woman that used to be my mommy, and I couldn't take it anymore."
Aunt Pam hugs me hard, and her hands feel cold. I ask her how I did what I did to Daddy.
"I'm a witch, Adele, and so are you," she tells me quietly.
"...and so are you," echoes in my mind over and over again. Aunt Pam doesn't try to get me to talk, and I'm glad she's hugging me because I think I need to be hugged right now. I know witches exist, but finding out I am one is real different.
"I have magic," I say slowly in a half question and half statement. I feel like a part of me just walked away and will never come back.
      "Yes," she answers.
"And I used it to hurt Daddy. I'm bad if I use it to hurt people."
      "No."
Uncle Simon shows up, and Aunt Pam tells me we'll talk more upstairs in my room.

Erin

I try to remain calm while taking care of Jeremy, who's determined to completely empty his diaper bag of all its toys. What is going ON?!
Thankfully, Simon carries Bryce inside the house and up the stairs, followed by Pamela and Adele. Pam's eyes ask me to stay with Jeremy.
I feel helpless! The man I love is upstairs passed out from I don't know what. Adele is crying, and Pamela wiped away burns from Bryce's arms. A tear or two escape my eyes. I want to go upstairs, but the message was clear: don't get in the way.
Jeremy stars babbling at me and hitting me with his stuffed animal like he wants me to play with him. I'm at my wit's end, but I have to hold it together to keep the tot from crying too. So, I play with him and his stuffed animals, him taking away and handing back his toys over and over again like he can't make up his mind if I should have them. Occasionally, I have to wipe away another tear.

After an eternity, Pam comes into the room to tell me that Adele is sleeping and that Bryce is awake and needing to talk to me.
"I wouldn't let him come downstairs, so please get up there before his stubborn behind comes down them anyway," she tells me and starts to pick up the toys, waving away my attempts to help her. Simon gives me a sympathetic look as I walk past him. Then, I fly up the stairs, the tears back in full force as all the panic I'd suppressed comes back to the surface.
"Bryce," I choke out when I open the door. He sits on the bed but gets up immediately upon seeing me.

"It's okay," he says before wrapping his arms around me.
"Should you be up? What happened? Are you okay?" I fire the questions at him.
"I'm fine," he says and kisses my forehead. "You need to sit down though."
"Me sit down? Don't worry about me, Bryce. What was that on your arms? Why did you get so exhausted you passed out? What happened?"
"I'll try to answer your questions if you come to bed," he says while pulling me along. His hands feel cold for the first time that I've ever noticed. That little thing only adds to my worry. Wanting to know what's going on and knowing he needs to rest for some reason, I do as he asks. He surprises me when he pulls me into his lap.

"I love you," he says in a sad voice.
"I love you too," I say back automatically.
"I've not told you everything about me though," he continues.

"Well, we knew there was stuff that we didn't know. I'll bet you didn't know I'm afraid of enclosed spaces and that's why I like being outside so much," I ramble on, worried.
"Erin, Ashley was a witch, is a witch," he says carefully.
"Bitch more like," I counter, and a small smile pulls at the corners of his mouth.
"And so is Pam. And so were my parents."
      "Huh?"
"And, apparently, Adele too," he says and watches me very closely.
"You're meaning..." I let my voice drag out as I remember Pam 'wiping away' Bryce's burns. Adele was crying. Bryce told her not to be upset. Adele put those burns there? I stare blankly at my boyfriend, wondering if I'm in some strange dream.
There are other types of people in the world, but in my sheltered life in Riverview, we hardly ever, if at all, saw any of it. At least as far as I knew.
Bryce's cold hand caresses my cheek as he watches me with a sad and worried expression.
"Your hands are cold," I point out blankly, glad to have something else to talk about.
His brows come together in confusion before he says, "They don't feel cold."
"They do to me," I say, and we get quiet again.

A pained look crosses his face, and he holds me tightly to him all of a sudden. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you. I was going to eventually, but it's not a huge part of my life anymore since I never had any power or anything like it."
Magic hands, I think suddenly and wonder if Bryce is more magical than he knows. Now isn't the time to discuss that, I don't think.
"Erin, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry," he cries quietly. After a few minutes, he asks, "Say something!"
"I'm still trying to take it all in," I say, and he holds me even tighter.
Several minutes pass as we sit on the bed with me in his lap. I want to get up to pace around the room, but I doubt Bryce would let me. My biggest surprise is that he never told me. But, I guess...
"I guess I understand why you wouldn't tell me this right away, especially if you think you don't have anything," I finish my thought aloud.
"I don't," he says quickly. "I'm just a regular guy, a freak occurrence in a long line of witches. It happens."
"What about Ashley's parents?" I ask randomly as I think about historical bloodlines. If I stay with him, my children could be magical. Not that that's bad, but I don't know if I'm prepared to deal with that.
"They are," he answers. He squeezes me hard and begs, "Please don't freak out and leave me."
"Bryce, I..." I was about to say that of course I wouldn't, but a small part of me is freaking out and wanting to run away. I can't tell him something that isn't entirely true.
"I was exhausted because I knew I had to fight it mentally or else I'd do nothing but scream, which would only make it worse, and that wore me out."
"Bryce, you're holding me too tight," I eke out.
"Sorry," he says and loosens his hold but brings one hand back behind my head to further cradle me to him. I don't resist it in the least, and I fist my hand into his shirt.
I start to understand why he put me in his lap now. He was afraid that if I'd been sitting apart from him that I'd get up and run. I worry that he's right. As he said it once, I'm a runner. If I'd been allowed to pace around the room, I could very well bolt.
"I would've had to tell you this eventually because there's a chance that I could pass the gene along," he says quietly, once again verbally alluding to our future. "I'd sort of hoped that Adele wouldn't have it either and that we could be freaks together, but I don't know what I was thinking. And, apparently, she takes after her mother in that respect. Well, I guess it's more direct in that side of magic to her. She channeled her anger at me and burned me, not even realizing she was doing it. And she has every right to be furious with me."
"I don't understand, Bryce. My head is spinning."
"I'm trying to explain what happened. You wanted to know, and I said I'd answer your questions." His cold hand comes up and strokes my face again.

I take a deep breath and just lay my head against him, listening to his heartbeat. Now, I'm the one who's exhausted.
"But you're okay?" I ask quietly.
"Yes. Pam took care of it," he answers. "She's mostly a healer. At the school when she taught kindergarten, she was Mrs. Drake, the teacher with the magic band-aids." Bryce chuckles. He takes a deep breath. "Our parents were doctors."
I love this man. I don't care if he's a zombie, nothing will stop me from loving him.
"I'm not going anywhere," I say softly and reach up to run my fingers against his perpetual five o'clock shadow.
He lets out a shaky breath and kisses me.

-------------------------------------------------------------
Next chapter, I'll back up a bit and tell what happens with Pamela and Adele after they come inside. This chapter got a little longer than I wanted it to, so I decided to leave that conversation for the next chapter. Pamela should answer some questions.

I'd planned this whole sims' magic thing from the beginning, but I could never fit it in since the beginning chapters were pure drama told mostly from Erin's p.o.v. Erin had no idea that some of her new friends were witches, so I couldn't reveal it that way. Plus, nobody treats it like it's a big deal. (Well, Ashley does, but that's another chapter.) I've always tried to sneak in mentioning how Bryce's hands are warm, Bryce has "magic hands," etc. Then there were those extremely obvious times with Lynne -- and Bryce remembering Ashley's actions (disintegrate every bug within a 20ft radius so that toddler Adele wouldn't eat them). Now that it's more central to the storyline, it may appear that I've changed directions, but I haven't.

Another note: You know, Jesse is a real sweet guy deep down, albeit overly-flirtatious at times, and Bryce is a bit of a jerk (some of you would argue that he's more than a bit). They're both hot. Why was it that Bryce was always able to steal any girl he wanted from Jesse?
